A 37-year-old Papaikou man has been indicted for the alleged sexual assault of a minor girl almost three years ago.
The two-court indictment returned June 8 by a Hilo grand jury charges Kakalia Mikaele Goeas with first- and third-degree sexual assault.
First-degree sexual assault is a Class A felony punishable by up to 20 years of imprisonment upon conviction, while third-degree sexual assault is a Class C felony that carries a maximum penalty of five years behind bars.
A bench warrant was issued for Goeas’ arrest along with the indictment, setting his bail at $60,000. Goeas had not been arrested as of Friday, police said.
The bench warrant sets conditions of release, should Goeas post bail, that include: no ownership or possession of firearms, ammunition or other dangerous weapons or destructive devices; undergoing a mental health assessment and compliance with any prescribed treatment and/or medication until clinically discharged; no contact with the minor and her guardians, and no threats or harm to the minor and her guardians.
According to the complaint, on Oct. 12, 2019, Goeas engaged in both sexual penetration and sexual contact with the minor, who was born in January 2012 and is identified in the document by only her initials.
According to police, the alleged offenses occurred in Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision in Puna.
Police said the girl reported the alleged molestation to an adult or adults, who contacted police.
A search of Hawaii court records by the Tribune-Herald turned up no prior criminal record for Goeas.
